5 Easy-ish Ways To Lose Weight in 2017: Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of this mini blog series "5 Easy-ish Ways to Lose Weight in 2017" where I'm counting down from hardest to easiest 5 different ways to drop a few pounds headed into the New Year. If you missed it, you can read Part 1 here.

Today, coming in as the #1 Easy-ish Way to Lose Weight in 2017...

1) 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up

This one's not "easy-ish", it's actually flat out easy. 

There's no gym time involved, no awful workouts or long periods of fasting. 

You simply wake up, somewhat hurry over to the kitchen and find a way to eat something that has 30 grams of protein within a half hour of opening your eyes for the day. That's it. 

I first heard about this back in 2010 when I read The Four-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss (blog readers will know I've been a long time fan of Tim's). 

In the book, Tim chronicles his dad's experience where he lost over 40 lbs in 90 days (going from 245 to 203 lbs) by making this small change to his diet. There are hundreds of similar case studies online. 

I also tried it for quite a long time, and while I never had much weight to lose, I do believe it helped me stay pretty thin despite aging well into my 30s and eating essentially whatever I wanted. (Brooke has traumatic memories of the piles of protein powder tubs that frequently littered our house!)

So how does it work?

Eating a high dose of protein early in the morning cuts your carb cravings and stabilizes your blood sugar, which helps you consume 400 fewer calories over the course of the day and burn more fat over time. Morning protein for the win!!

And it's pretty simple to find 30 grams of protein in the morning, including eggs, bacon and protein shakes. 

But there can be some problems when you do it every day, most notably time and taste. 

Time: If you go the eggs and bacon route, it can be time consuming and quite the schlep each morning to break out the pans and fire up the stove, etc. And 30 minutes passes quick, especially if you haven't had your coffee yet. 

Taste: If you go the protein powder shake route, it's much faster but be prepared to get tired of the "chalky" taste each morning. Some mornings you might even struggle to choke it down. 

HMMMN....if only there was a morning protein option that tasted great AND only took seconds to prepare!!



Oh yeah!!!

Announcing the Mighty Muffin Challenge

I started this year with a challenge to myself - to write and share 25 personal blog posts. It was something that felt a bit scary, but I knew it would help me grow. 

And now I want to end the year with a challenge to some of you.
